What to expect at Little Sing

My niece Anna wanted to see all the props and instruments that I use in a Little Sing Session, so we got everything out and my brother Willie took a photo.

What happens at a Little Sing session…..

The children and adults sit in a circle on big cushions made by my Mum. When everyone is comfortable and settled we talk about The Magic Line, where the carpet ends and the wooden floor begins, this creates a boundary between the performance space and the participants space.

We always kick off with familiar songs, I pull props out of the hamper and encourage everyone to sing along. The children who come every week soon learn to predict what’s coming next and their singing confidence grows. There are a few originals in there too, a song about the seasons and a caterpillar changing into a butterfly. I always play my violin and then we finish the first half with a piano accompanied version of Puff the Magic Dragon – one of my favourites.

The hamper of toys and basket of books entices investigation, and everything is pulled out onto the carpet during the break. I serve freshly brewed tea, coffee, biscuits, oatcakes and water. Everyone has a chance to socialise and get to know one another.

After a quick tidy we get back to singing, starting with Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Incy Wincy Spider. Time is Moving On – a song I wrote for my teenage son, has become a favourite and parents tell me that they sing it to their children when they’re rushing out the door! Towards the end of the second half we take out the instruments, maracas, mini tambourines, shakers and rain sticks. Little sing finishes with a relaxing lullaby.

I hope to see you there for singing fun!!

Halloween Week!

We carved out a pumpkin and welcomed guisers for Halloween, with fiddle tunes from Juliette and very funny jokes. Adele reworked Twinkle Twinkle Little Star into an excellent scary witchy song. Felix created an entire performance piece involving zombies and dramatic music. And this morning we had a lovely Little Sing session with Pheobe and Molly. Thank you for the picture!

More about Juliette: she’s seven years old and comes from Paris, she has been on holiday in Edinburgh with her family for the past week and I was lucky to see her every day for a fiddle lesson.  She is amazing and plays beautifully, she picked up tunes with ease and is heading back to Paris playing Scottish and Irish reels and jigs. She entertained the local area by bringing her fiddle guising. Let’s hope she comes back sometime soon! Thank you Juliette.

First Week

Little Sing is a brand new music and singing group for adults and children under 5. It’s been running for a week and it’s been wonderful! With well known nursery rhymes and some of my own songs, “Ringo the Flamingo” is a particular favourite. Here’s a picture of Ringo!

It all happens in my cosy living room, the music and singing is live (of course) and everyone joins in! I play a few instruments and it's always a pleasure to share. Half way through we have a coffee / tea / water / biscuit break, I bring out a big hamper of toys for the children to investigate and the grown ups have a good old chat! The children play jingle jangle shaky instruments towards the end of the second half, all good musical fun.

Little sing wouldn’t have come to fruition without the help and support of some very special people: Gill Bowman who runs Song Circle in the Skylark Café in Stockbridge has been so encouraging and has given me loads of help and advice. My good friend Mary Wormell designed the wonderful Little Sing logo. And my mother, who is brilliant with a sewing machine, came all the way down from the Highlands with beautiful curtains and cushions which she made herself. Thank you!!

You can sign up for little sing here or if you want to just drop in then please send me a text, it’s free to new comers. My name is Claire and my number is 07788487447. It runs every week day between 10.30am and 11.30am.

So come along to Little Sing because singing is good for you, and I’ll talk more about that in my next blog post!!!

I hope to see you soon. 😊 😊
